How it works

Every line is a ride. There are 217 of them, recorded on a Garmin and pulled out of Strava, a little over 4,815 km between August 2024 and August 2026. Almost all of it is within an hour of Dublin, with the rest picked up on trips to Vancouver, Mallorca, Rimini and Amsterdam.

Nothing counts how many times a road was ridden. Every track is drawn faintly on top of the ones before it, so a road ridden once stays pale and a road ridden two hundred times builds up into a deep burnt red. The lines keep the same thickness however far you zoom in, so routes that had merged into one dark line separate back into the roads that make it up.

The land is the only thing not drawn from the rides, and it is filled as a shade off the sea instead of being outlined. A shoreline is a line and so is a ride, so an outlined coast came out looking like one more road. It is OpenStreetMap coastline close to where I have ridden and Natural Earth further out, both saved into the page when it was built, so nothing is loaded while you look at it. Turbo sessions are left out, and the streets nearest home are trimmed off each ride before the data ever reaches the page.
